The silicon steel transformer core is the core magnetic conductive component of a transformer. Made from silicon steel sheets (special electrical steel containing 1.0%–3.5% silicon) through cutting and lamination, its core function is to construct a closed magnetic circuit, enabling efficient conduction of alternating magnetic fields and energy conversion.
Its performance directly determines the transformer's energy efficiency, volume, and operational stability, making it the "heart" component of all power-frequency transformers in the power and electronics fields.
Core Classification: Based on Silicon Steel Sheet Type
According to the magnetic properties of silicon steel sheets, silicon steel transformer cores are mainly divided into two categories, each suitable for different power and energy efficiency requirements:
1. Non-Oriented Silicon Steel Core (CRNO Core)
Material Characteristics: Uses cold-rolled non-oriented (CRNO) silicon steel sheets. The crystal grains have no obvious directional arrangement, resulting in "isotropic" magnetic properties (difference in magnetic permeability and core loss in any direction ≤10%). The silicon content is usually 1.5%–2.5%, and the thickness ranges from 0.35mm to 0.5mm.
Core Advantages: Flexible manufacturing (can be cut and stamped in any direction), low cost, and good toughness (not easily brittle), making it suitable for scenarios with variable magnetic field directions.
Typical Applications: Small and medium-power transformers, such as power transformers for household appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators), auxiliary transformers for industrial control (capacity ≤10kVA), and small distribution transformers (below 10kV/50kVA).
2. Oriented Silicon Steel Core (CRGO Core)
Material Characteristics: Uses cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) silicon steel sheets. Through cold rolling and high-temperature annealing, the crystal grains are highly aligned along the rolling direction, leading to "anisotropic" magnetic properties (magnetic permeability in the rolling direction is more than 50 times higher than that in the transverse direction). The silicon content is 2.5%–3.5%, the thickness is 0.18mm–0.35mm, and the surface is coated with an insulating layer (to prevent inter-lamination short circuits).
Core Advantages: High magnetic permeability (B8 ≥1.78T) and low core loss (P1.5/50 ≤1.1W/kg), with much better energy efficiency than non-oriented cores. It can reduce the transformer's volume and loss.
Typical Applications: Medium and high-power transformers, such as grid distribution transformers (above 10kV/100kVA), power transformers (110kV and above), and high-efficiency energy-saving transformers (Class 1/Class 2 energy efficiency).
