Motor Core

The motor core is the real center of any electric motor or generator, the quiet partner that controls how well it works, its power, and how long it lasts.

It's a collection of metal sheets, called laminations, that create the main structure of an electric motor or generator. This core is the base for all other important parts like rotors, stators, windings, and cases.

A well-made motor core, using materials like silicon steel, greatly improves the efficiency and performance of an electric motor.

 

 
The motor core has two jobs: it is the center of the magnetic flow and the backbone that gives it strength. The quality of a motor or generator depends a lot on the quality of its motor core, which needs to be strong, solid, and provide electrical insulation to handle the high pressures and heat inside the machine.

Motor Core Structural Composition


 

  • Stator Core: Usually formed by laminating silicon steel sheets, it is the fixed part of the motor and serves as the framework of the magnetic circuit. Its role is to provide a magnetic circuit for the winding, reduce eddy current loss, and improve magnetic permeability. The design of the iron core needs to consider magnetic flux distribution, strength, and heat dissipation performance.

 

  • Rotor Core: It is the rotating part of the motor, and its structure varies depending on the type of motor. For example, a squirrel-cage rotor consists of an iron core and conducting bars, with the conducting bars welded to end rings to form a structure similar to a squirrel cage; a wound rotor has windings wound around its iron core, which can be connected to an external circuit through slip rings and brushes; a permanent magnet rotor uses permanent magnet materials as the magnetic field source.

 

Motor Core Material Selection


 

High magnetic permeability materials such as silicon steel sheets are usually used, which can effectively reduce hysteresis loss and eddy current loss, and improve the operating efficiency of the motor.

 

In permanent magnet motors, high-performance rare-earth permanent magnets, such as neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB), are often used in the rotor to enhance the motor's efficiency and power output.
