Two Major Losses Of Motor Core
Motor core loss, commonly referred to as "iron loss", is also known as "magnetic core loss" or "excitation loss".
It refers to the power loss in magnetic materials caused by alternating or pulsating magnetic fields, manifested in the form of heat. It is divided into two parts: hysteresis loss and eddy current loss.
1. Hysteresis Loss
Hysteresis loss is the energy consumed due to hysteresis in ferromagnetic materials during repeated magnetization, mainly caused by the friction of magnetic domain rotation. Hysteresis means that when the magnetic state of ferromagnetic materials changes, the magnetization intensity lags behind the magnetic field intensity. The relationship between its magnetic flux density (B) and magnetic field intensity (H) presents a hysteresis loop.
After one cycle, the hysteresis loss per unit volume of the core is proportional to the area of the hysteresis loop. This part of energy is converted into heat, which increases the temperature of the equipment and reduces efficiency. It is a component of iron loss in electrical equipment and is undesirable in equipment such as AC motors. Soft magnetic materials have narrow hysteresis loops, so their hysteresis loss is relatively small. For this reason, electrical steel sheets are widely used in motors, transformers, relays and other equipment.
2. Eddy Current Loss
Eddy current loss refers to the energy loss caused by induced currents in a conductor when the conductor moves in a non-uniform magnetic field or is in a magnetic field that changes with time. The closed loops of current formed inside the conductor are called eddy currents (also known as Foucault currents).

Measures to Reduce Motor Core Loss
Reduce the magnetic density: Increase the length of the core to lower the magnetic flux density, but this will increase the amount of iron used in the motor.
Reduce the thickness of core sheets: Decrease the loss caused by induced currents. For example, replacing hot-rolled electrical steel sheets with cold-rolled ones can reduce the thickness of electrical steel sheets, but thinner core sheets will increase the number of core sheets and the manufacturing cost of the motor.
Use cold-rolled electrical steel sheets with good magnetic conductivity: Reduce hysteresis loss.
Adopt high-performance insulating coatings for core sheets.
Optimize heat treatment and manufacturing techniques: Residual stress in core sheets after processing will seriously affect the loss of the motor. During the processing of electrical steel sheets, cutting methods and punching stress have a great impact on core loss. Cutting along the rolling direction of electrical steel sheets and performing heat treatment on electrical steel stamped sheets can reduce the loss by 10%-20%.
