Silicon Steel Core
A silicon steel core is a soft magnetic component made by laminating silicon steel sheets. It leverages high saturation magnetic induction and low cost to serve as a core part of the magnetic circuit in power-frequency (50/60Hz) electrical equipment like transformers and motors. Primarily used for energy conversion and magnetic signal transmission in power-frequency scenarios, it is indispensable in fields such as power systems and industrial motors.

Silicon Steel Core Characteristics
- High Saturation Magnetic Induction (Bs: 1.8-2.0T): It can withstand strong magnetic fields from large currents and is not prone to magnetic saturation, making it suitable for high-current conditions like power system busbar protection and distribution cabinets.
- Low Loss at Power Frequency: In 50/60Hz environments, its hysteresis loss and eddy current loss are controllable, meeting energy efficiency standards for transformers and motors-for example, the iron loss of ordinary distribution transformers can be as low as ≤5W/kg.
- Significant Cost Advantage: Compared with permalloy (nickel content over 80%) and nanocrystalline alloys, silicon steel has easily accessible raw materials and mature production processes, leading to lower mass production costs and suitability for large-scale industrial use.
- Strong Process Adaptability: It can be made into shapes like toroids and rectangles via lamination. The laminated structure reduces eddy current loss, and its volume and specifications can be flexibly adjusted based on equipment needs.
Types and Adaptable Scenarios
Cold-rolled Grain-oriented Silicon Steel Core: It has high magnetic permeability and low iron loss along the rolling direction, mainly used in power transformers and distribution transformers.
Cold-rolled Non-oriented Silicon Steel Core: It features uniform magnetic properties and good mechanical strength, typically applied in motor stators/rotors and welding transformers.
Hot-rolled Silicon Steel Core (Gradually Phased Out): It has poor thickness uniformity and high loss, so it is only used in low-end small motors and old-style transformers.
Silicon Steel Core Application
- Power Transformers: Especially distribution transformers and ultra-high voltage transmission transformers, which mostly use cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel cores (e.g., high-magnetic-induction Hi-B cores) to reduce operating iron loss and improve grid transmission efficiency.
- Power-frequency Motors: The stator/rotor cores of industrial fan motors, water pump motors, and new energy vehicle auxiliary motors (e.g., window drive and power steering motors) often use cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel cores to balance performance and cost.
- Power-frequency Current Transformers (CT): For CTs in power system busbar protection and large-current monitoring, the high saturation magnetic induction of silicon steel cores allows them to withstand instantaneous large currents (tens of kiloamperes) during short circuits, ensuring measurement stability.
