Low noise, high permeability grain-oriented (GO) electrical steel is a specialized magnetic alloy designed for low core loss and high permeability along the rolling direction, primarily used in transformer cores to reduce energy waste and acoustic noise.
It is achieved through specific silicon steel compositions and heat treatments, with microstructural improvements like magnetic domain refinement, which is sometimes done using techniques like picosecond laser scribing, to reduce magnetostriction and vibration.
How it Works
- High Permeability:
The steel is engineered so that its magnetic domains, which are microscopic regions with aligned magnetic poles, are predominantly oriented in the rolling direction. This alignment allows for efficient magnetization and demagnetization with less energy loss.
- Low Noise:
Noise in transformers is primarily caused by magnetostriction, the physical change in shape of the magnetic material as it is magnetized. Advanced manufacturing and processing, including refinements to the magnetic domain structure, reduce this effect, resulting in lower noise emissions.
- Low Core Loss:
By controlling the magnetic domain structure and the steel's composition, the amount of energy lost as heat during the magnetization cycle (core loss) is minimized.
