Overview of Grain-oriented Electrical Steel

Grain-oriented electrical steel, also known as grain-oriented flat-rolled electrical steel, refers to cold-rolled electrical steel with a silicon content of 2.9%-3.5% and a crystal structure with certain regularity and directionality. As an essential magnetic soft material in the electric power industry, grain-oriented electrical steel is mainly used in the transformer industry, rectifier industry, reactor industry and large motor industry. According to a release from the Ministry of Commerce, dumping of oriented electrical steel products imported from Japan, South Korea and the European Union has weakened China's oriented electrical steel industry. It was decided to impose anti-dumping duties on these oriented electrical steel products imported from these countries and regions starting from July 23. The tax rate is 37.3%-46.3%. The implementation period is five years.

The key to using grain-oriented electrical steel to produce Goss textured silicon steel is the use of secondary recrystallization. In order to achieve secondary recrystallization, it is usually required to add normal grain growth inhibitors, such as MnS, to the alloy. The grain growth inhibitor must be dispersed in a mixed form within the alloy matrix. When secondary recrystallization occurs, the normal growth of matrix crystals will be effectively inhibited. It is also required that it can be easily eliminated during the final high-temperature annealing to prevent the magnetic properties of the product from deteriorating. In secondary recrystallization, the orientation nuclei of secondary grain growth are mainly produced through appropriate cold rolling processes and recrystallization annealing. Since phase transformation destroys grain orientation, it is critical to maintain a single phase during heat treatment.

Grain-oriented flat-rolled electrical steel plates can be divided into oriented silicon steel plates, non-grain-oriented flat-rolled electrical steel plates and DW materials. The thickness of non-grain-oriented flat-rolled electrical steel sheets for motors is usually 0.35mm and 0.50mm, and they are mainly supplied in rolls. Their silicon content is usually very low; the thickness of grain-oriented flat electrical steel sheets for transformers is usually 0.20 mm, 0.30 mm, 0.35 mm and 0.50 mm. They are usually high in silicon content.
