What is a stacked core transformer?
A stacked core transformer uses a core made of thin, flat laminations of magnetic steel stacked together in a rectangular or square formation. The laminations are typically coated with an insulating material (like varnish) to reduce eddy current losses, which occur due to circulating currents in the core. This design allows for cost-effective production but has higher losses compared to wound cores.
What is a wound core transformer?
A wound core transformer uses a core formed by tightly winding a long ribbon of magnetic steel into a circular or oval shape. This eliminates or minimizes the gaps in the magnetic circuit, resulting in lower eddy current losses and magnetic losses. Wound cores are preferred in applications that demand high efficiency, reduced noise, and compact designs.
Comparison Between Stacked Core and Wound Core Transformers
| Feature | Stacked Core Transformers | Wound Core Transformers |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Stacked laminations of steel | Continuously wound ribbon of steel |
| Efficiency | Lower due to air gaps in the core | Higher with continuous magnetic path |
| Applications | Large power transformers | Distribution and compact transformers |
| Manufacturing Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Magnetic Losses | Higher | Lower |
| Noise | More | Less |
What is the difference between stacked core and wound core transformers?
Stacked Core Transformers
Structure: Stacked cores are constructed by stacking thin, flat sheets (laminations) of magnetic steel. These laminations are layered to form a rectangular or square core shape.
Design: Typically, stacked cores have three or four vertical legs. Each leg is surrounded by transformer windings.
Applications: Commonly used in large power transformers or in designs where cost-effectiveness and ease of manufacturing are prioritized.
Advantages:
Easier to manufacture and assemble.
Flexible for large-scale transformers.
Disadvantages:
Higher magnetic losses due to increased air gaps at the joints between stacked laminations.
Less efficient compared to wound cores.
Wound Core Transformers
Structure: Wound cores are constructed by continuously winding a long ribbon of silicon steel into a closed loop, forming a circular or oval shape. The core is often cut and annealed to remove mechanical stress before being reassembled around the windings.
Design: This design eliminates gaps in the magnetic path, providing a more continuous flow of magnetic flux.
Applications: Commonly used in smaller transformers, distribution transformers, and applications requiring high efficiency.
Advantages:
Reduced core losses due to the elimination of air gaps in the magnetic circuit.
Better magnetic efficiency and reduced noise.
Compact and lightweight design.
Disadvantages:
More complex and expensive to manufacture.
