Cold rolled grain oriented (CRGO) silicon steel is used for laminations in power transformers. Cold rolled grain oriented (CRGO) sheet has excellent magnetic properties in the rolling direction. The crystals are aligned in the direction through cold rolling and heat treatment processes. The magnetic properties of CRGO steel plates depend on the magnetism of individual crystals of the material and the orientation direction of the crystals. The performance of CRGO silicon steel is improved through composition, manufacturing process, heat treatment, laser irradiation, etc.
When alloying, the concentration levels of carbon, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen must be kept low as these elements indicate the presence of carbides, sulfides, oxides and nitrides. These compounds, even in particles as small as one micron in diameter, increase hysteresis losses while also reducing magnetic permeability. The larger the size, the smaller the grain loss, so the grain size of CRGO steel is larger than that of ordinary steel.
The thickness of CRGO sheets is approximately 0.35mm to 0.23mm. These CRGO steel laminates are stacked together to form the magnetic core of the transformer.
Commercially available CRGO steel plates will contain 3% silicon. The higher the silicon content, the higher the resistivity and the smaller the eddy current losses. However, silicon content higher than 3.5% makes CRGO silicon steel sheets brittle.
