Cold rolled oriented electrical steel is undoubtedly the most important soft magnetic material in use today. Wheather in small transformer, distribution transformer or in power transformer, oriented electrical steel is a must for the production of energy saving electrical machines.

Cold rolled oriented electrical steels are iron-silicon alloys that provide low core loss and high permeability needed for more efficient and economical electrical transformers. Cold rolled oriented grades of electrical steels are typically used for transformer cores.

Cold Rolled Oriented Silicon Steel Product 

The composition of grain-oriented electrical steel is more restricted than non-oriented varieties. The texture is formed through a series of careful machining and annealing operations, and the material must remain essentially single-phase throughout processing, especially during the final anneal, because phase changes can destroy the texture. To avoid the y-ring of the Fe-Si phase system, today's commercial steels contain about 3.25% Si. Higher silicon varieties may have been favored due to increased resistivity and lower magnetostriction, but were excluded due to difficulties in cold rolling.

Temperature, atmosphere composition and dew point are strictly controlled to decarburize the strip without oxidizing the surface. During this treatment, primary recrystallization occurs, forming small, uniform, equiaxed grains. When assembled in a transformer core, the resulting magnesium silicate glass coating provides electrical insulation between successive laminations. At this stage, the electrical steel is graded by cutting Epstein samples from the coils; the samples are stress-relief annealed and flattened at 790°C, and tested for core losses.
